Flanges play a vital role in terms of plumbing fittings. Flanges are used to strengthen the ability of the pipes and reduce the pressure. SAE flanges are hydraulic flanges that are made by accompanying the SAE J518 standard. SAE stands for Society Automotive Engineers. SAE flanges are used in the hydraulic system of the automotive industry. These flanges can be made from different kinds of materials. Usually, forged steel is used to make this kind of flanges. Steel ST52.3 and Stainless Steel AISI SS316L are the most common type of materials used to make SAE flanges. Some modern manufacturers are making SAE flanges by using some other materials.
SAE flanges size comes in only two sizes. Code 61 is called the 3000 series and code 62 is called the 6000 series. For the 3000 series, the size range varies from 3.8 inches to 5 inches and for 6000 series flanges are available in between 3 inches to 3.8 inches.
For the 3000 series, the pressure range varies in between the 34-345 bar and for the 6000 series the range varies from the 200-414 bar. You should be able to find the exact pressure capability of the pipes in the pipe instruction that comes from the manufacturer. Also when you are installing the flange you need to know that the range of the flange will impact on the system. So if you choose a lower pressure flange that will lower the capacity of the system. And if you install a higher capacity flange on a lower capacity system, the capacity of the flange will be under-utilized.
An SAE flange set has two sides. One side contains side flanges and another contains o ring flanges. When attached both sides forms together to take more pressure. The tightening of the bolts will place the grooves to press the o ring in a recessed area and therefore form a very tight joint. This system makes the SAE flanges stronger compared to the metal to metal flanges because those need to be tightened in higher and narrower torque range. This o ring system helps to make the SAE system good to handle leakage. If the system is installed with proper torque and materials like the cap screws and washers, it can withstand the pressure you need it to do. Also, the SAE system does not require hex nuts to secure the flanges.
